Republican State Convention, May 12, 2012
(My observations)
Saturday, 8-9 a.m. No sign in sheets: I have never been to a convention or mandatory meeting that you didn’t have to sign in. But there were no sign in sheets. Just plain white envelops with a one-page copy of the rules (NO BALLOTS). So basically we really don’t have a list of WHO attended the meeting. We knew the number of attendees by subtracting the number of envelopes left over.
No crowd control: The RP (Ron Paul) people were evident from the start by the noise they made. Interrupting speakers, booing (even during Romney’s son’s speech! He was gracious to them, yet they showed complete disrespect), shouting out “President Ron Paul” at various times–very rude to say the least. The chairman should have made it clear in the beginning that there would be civility and decorum OR a police escort. That never happened and the RP people just kept getting louder and more obnoxious, until it seemed that by the end of the meeting they were practically taking over. The party leadership seemed to cower before them.
Lack of organization:—We were excused from the floor to meet with our various districts (1500 people). The leaders of those CD meetings were not notified beforehand that they would be officiating (surprise, surprise!). We were just getting settled when we were called back to the floor because the credentials hadn’t been reported—so 1500 people moved from the convention floor, to their various congressional district areas, back to the floor, and finally back to their district meetings. At that point we had to wait for the ballots to arrive. So we waited and listened to more speakers….
Dishonesty? : The ballots finally came in, printed on regular type paper. Anyone could print more from a regular printer…. They were counted and we were short. Did something happen to them? Why didn’t they have enough? The State GOP KNEW how many delegates would be attending from each district—those totals were turned in weeks before. Why didn’t they have the correct number? So we waited again for more to be printed. A woman came in and asked if anyone had a key to an office they could use to print more ballots. Someone said they did, so they went off to print more. How many more were printed? Was there any security?
Other Strange Things : When the results were finally in from the first vote (it was close to 2 p.m. at this time, only about 3 or 4 hours behind), a RP supporter ran outside to tell his friends that they had won two delegates—BEFORE the official word was given. How did he know who won? They seemed to have a very well organized plan to plant their delegates in opposition to Romney—the candidate that won the Primary by the voice of the people. As soon as we figured out what was going on, we agreed to vote for the Romney slate (why can’t we get together and have just ONE slate? Why do we always ‘shoot ourselves in the foot’? Why the division? If we had even KNOWN that Romney was putting a slate together maybe we wouldn’t have taken the effort to put together one that had pledged to uphold conservative principles AND support Romney!).
Unreal length of time to tally votes: In years past, we were given ballots printed on cardstock and voting machines that could tally votes almost immediately. There were no machines, no cardstock and basically no results. It took literally hours to hear who won on various votes taken. We were voting on the same people, the same ballot, when we didn’t know what people had been elected. Wasted votes. Also—the ballots were on 2 separate unconnected pieces of paper. We were told that we could only vote for a certain amount…. But who would know how many were voted for when the two ballots aren’t connected? We just put them in a plastic tub!
RP Purpose: A friend overheard some RP people saying that one of their purposes that day was to prolong the meeting so the Romney Delegates would go home and the RP Alternates would be put in… I think they succeeded because the meeting lasted from 9 am to 9 pm and they did get delegates elected.
One of the last votes taken was the election of the National Committeewoman. The bylaws state that the winner must win by 50% plus one. With 3 people running, a ‘run off’ election was certainly a possibility. Karen Johnson got the most votes with 300 plus, Sharon Giese with 200 plus and then Linda White with 175 (I didn’t write down the exact numbers). The question arose about having a quorum to take that last vote. By this time many people had left. Do the State’s Bylaws say that a quorum must be maintained throughout the meeting, or just a quorum at the beginning? No one could answer that question. I couldn’t believe that they didn’t have a copy somewhere to refer to. More RP supporters were arriving even after 8:30. The meeting ended at 9:00 p.m., with the RP people loudly protesting (as usual) the suggestion to finish the run off through the mail (even though their candidate had the most votes). They shouted to ‘finish the meeting in the parking lot!’ The ‘run off’ never happened because time ran out and we needed to vacate the building.
Immediately after the gavel went down, they gathered up by the podium. The man at the podium would yell out a RP statement (I was toward the back and the microphone was off) and then everyone raised their hands. This was repeated several times with lots of energy and noise. It reminded me of the Nazi salute. It was almost scary. If I EVER had ANY intention of supporting Ron Paul before, it would be gone now. They claim to support the constitution, but they really want to force their way and force their candidate with noise and intimidation—in spite of the constitution. When you add up the ‘in your face’ Ron Paul people, the organization (lack of) and leadership (lack of)—it equals the most divisive, offensive and unbelievable meeting I have ever attended!
